Roblox is essentially a mix between a social networking tool and a massive mini-game aggregator. Rather than play games within the world by the developers as you might initially expect to be the case, however, you’ll instead play your own games and others created by those just like you within the community. Real time combat games, platformers, RPG’s — nothing is off limits, save your imagination can handle it all!

Before we delve a bit deeper into just how well Roblox plays and — perhaps most importantly — whether it’s even fun or entertaining or not, let’s first take a quick look at the basics, shall we?

Publisher: Roblox Corporation

Number of players: High

Type of MMO:

EXP Rate: Slow

PvP: Open-world

Filesize: N/A

Worth Your Time: Definitely worth a shot

Pros: Refreshing, uniquely original concept; Open-ended type game building tool truly offers infinite amounts of possibility; Social networking stylized format is unsurprisingly addictive.

Cons: Unfortunate lag issues; Map creation tool has an incredibly steep learning curve; Several of the more enjoyable features require a paid subscription; Jagged, rough graphics.

GAMEPLAY

As already discussed, Roblox is less of an open-ended socialized style game where you play limitless amounts of mini-games made by the game’s developer so much as it’s one where you play mini-games created by the in-game community itself. It’s certainly a refreshing and truly original concept — and to a point, works quite well. You see, if you go into Roblox expecting some kind of trailblazing and industry-changing experience, you’ll no doubt be disappointed. However, if you approach it for what it is — which is essentially just a wonky, goofy, open-ended social mini-game playground — you’ll be hard-pressed to leave feeling any kind of letdown whatsoever.

It’s just fun and it’s just goofy. And sometimes we as gamers — even self-professed serious, legitimate and oftentimes even professional gamers — need that. We need a laid back, casual yet super fun and mindlessly addicting game such as Roblox.

 GRAPHICS

Obviously Roblox — while succeeding in most other categories such as gameplay, fun factor and replayability — doesn’t have much to offer in the graphical department. In fact, sometimes the game is downright ugly. The visuals are oftentimes incredibly blocky and rough almost to a comedic level. However, for what Roblox is ultimately trying to do — which is offer an open-ended, massively multiplayer online mini-game filled social network — it succeeds so well that the graphics just don’t seem to matter very much.

They’re still really, really awful, though. So if you’re a graphics nerd and/or tweak out over anything and everything high resolution in regards to your video games then, well… you need not apply. You can just calmly turn around and start running the other way now.

THE BOTTOM LINE

When it’s all said and done, Roblox is an entertaining, original and truly refreshing MMO. Considering all of the mini-games are also created by the players themselves, there’s a staggering amount of replayability enveloped in Roblox‘s crudely harsh graphical interface. Again, if you’re the type of person who gets off on high graphical output or the like, you’re going to have a bad time with the interface and in-game graphics in Roblox. However, if you can get past that one speed bump, you’ll have hours and hours of creativity-fueled fun and wacky hijinks ahead of you.

FINAL SCORE:  7.0 out of 10 stars
